Short answer
Myths say: “you do not choose parents — endure,” “a psychologist will destroy the family,” “we do not air dirty linen,” “online is not for such topics,” “if you love, you forgive everything.” They forbid an adult boundary in the name of morals. Therapy’s aim is not to destroy the lineage. It is your contact with yourself in the system that made you. Afterwards, relationships sometimes warm; sometimes they become honestly distant.

What is it?

A myth protects against the shame of “I am a bad child.” Gestalt meets loyalty as a living force that can be honoured other than by self-erasure.

Signs

  • You postpone help until parents “die unoffended”
  • You hide therapy as a betrayal of the lineage
  • You forgive by order, and the body does not forgive
  • You compare yourself with “normal families” in the feed

Causes

  • A cult of sacrifice in the name of family
  • Fear of community judgment
  • Mixing therapy with informing
  • Stories that “a psychologist set us against each other” without boundary context

What can I do myself?

  • Call therapy growing up, not betrayal
  • Test the myth: has endurance over years changed the cycle?
  • Separate secrecy from shame
  • Do not promise that the psychologist will “reconcile everyone for the holiday”

When to seek professional help

If a myth closes the door, bring it. Often it is the family’s voice inside.

Frequently asked questions

Do good children never limit parents?

Adult children have a right to a boundary. Kindness without dignity often ends in an explosion or illness. A boundary can be respectful.

Is online unserious for “deep family trauma”?

Depth sits in contact and time. The home where the child role lives is exactly a place to observe — from a separate room.

Is forgiveness a duty?

No. Forgiveness is not assigned. You can choose a boundary, distance, facts of respect now. The body has a right not to “close” on a moral timetable.

Will therapy destroy the family?

It can change the language. Sometimes the system cannot bear an adult no — that is clarity, not an aim to destroy. The aim is your choice and dignity.
