Bodily and mental signs of a panic attack
- Short answer
- Panic-attack signs gather into a short storm: a pounding heart, air that feels insufficient, sweat, shaking, nausea, tingling, fear of fainting. On top of that comes horror that something irreversible is about to happen. The list is not for self-diagnosis — it is so you can name the experience and not stay mute with it.
What is it?
Panic symptoms are the language of an emergency system: muscles, heart, breath, attention. They can resemble a medical crisis, so a check-up is often appropriate. Psychologically it matters that intensity is not the same as danger in every second, even though it feels that way.
Signs
- A sudden pounding heart that feels “too strong to be safe”
- A sense of choking or not being able to take a full breath
- Trembling, cold sweat, weakness in the legs
- Fear that the heart will stop or that you will faint among people
Causes
- Attention locks onto the body and amplifies every signal
- Over-breathing changes sensations in the hands, lips, and head
- Shame about “looking weak” stops you from sitting and grounding
- After the first episode the brain scans similar sensations as danger
What can I do myself?
- Name three sensations without judgment (“heart is fast” instead of “I am dying”)
- Put a hand on a table or wall — outer support shrinks the inner drop
- Do not check your pulse every minute if that spins the fear
- After the wave, drink water and give yourself twenty minutes without big decisions
When to seek professional help
If signs repeat and avoidance of transport, shops, or leaving home appears, do not wait until the map of life shrinks. A psychologist works with fear of the symptoms; a doctor, if a health check is needed.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the head spin?
Often because of a change in breathing and vessel tone, plus fear of falling. It is awful, but dizziness in the wave is not by itself a stroke. A medical check reduces extra unknown.
Can a panic attack happen without fear of dying?
Yes. For some people shame, detachment, nausea, or “this body is not mine” leads. The shape of the peak varies; intensity and the wish to flee the moment are shared.
How do I tell this from allergy or asthma?
On your own it is risky. If there is wheezing, swelling, known asthma or allergy, follow the medical plan. A psychologist does not replace emergency care.
Why does the body ache after an attack?
Muscles were at maximum readiness. Pain and fatigue are the trace of mobilisation. Gentle movement, warmth, and sleep help more than self-criticism to “get it together.”
