Signs that something in the relationship is systematically off
- Short answer
- Signs of trouble in a couple are not only shouting. They include vanished curiosity, devaluing, sex as a bargain or its absence without talk, secrets about “small things,” a constant “you always.” One fight does not prove collapse. A repeating pattern after which no one restores contact already asks for attention.
What is it?
Signals are ways a couple says the contact cycle is tearing. They are not a verdict and do not replace your decision to stay or leave. They are a map for an honest conversation or for therapy.
Signs
- You complain to friends more than you speak to your partner
- Touch has vanished or become mechanical
- Money, children, parents — endless battlefields with no decision
- A fantasy of being alone appears, and it holds more calm than sadness
Causes
- Hurts never complete — they wait for the next spark
- Shame and pride block “I am hurt”
- A third party (work, phone, parents) has become the tension regulator
- There is no repair ritual, only exhaustion after the storm
What can I do myself?
- Write three repeating scenes from the month — no trial, as a script
- Ask yourself what you avoid most fiercely in conversation
- Return one neutral ritual: coffee together without a guilt review
- If there is humiliation, fear, or control — that is already about safety, not only “crisis”
When to seek professional help
Signs by themselves do not tell you what to do with the couple. They tell you that ignoring costs closeness. A psychologist helps tell fatigue of contact from danger, so you are not left alone with the doubt.
Frequently asked questions
How many signs are “enough” to start therapy?
Persistent discomfort is enough. You do not need ten items. One repeating pain can already be a request.
Are periodic crises normal?
Yes, couples go through waves. What becomes harmful is the absence of restored respect after a wave. The difference is repair, not the existence of a storm.
My partner says all is well and I see signs. What then?
Your perception is also a fact of the couple. Speak from yourself without proving “you are blind.” If dialogue is impossible, individual therapy clarifies the next step.
Are there red lines where you do not “work on the relationship”?
Violence, threats, systematic humiliation are about safety and protection, not ordinary couples therapy. Safety first.
