What burnout is and why it is not the same as “just tired”
- Short answer
- Burnout is deep exhaustion after long strain without recovery: energy does not return over a weekend, the meaning of work or care fades, cynicism or emptiness appears. Ordinary tiredness lifts after sleep. Burnout stays even when you “are not doing anything special,” because the nervous system has been in debt for a long time. It is not laziness or a weak character.
What is it?
In psychoeducation, burnout is a state of exhausted contact with work, people, and yourself. Gestalt sees interrupted cycles: giving without a right to take, holding a role without pause. This is not a medical label from an article; a doctor and a psychologist can walk in parallel if the body has already “switched off.”
Signs
- Morning is heavier than evening, even after sleep
- Work that once fed you now only presses
- Cynical jokes or total indifference instead of former involvement
- Rest brings guilt, as if you “have no right”
Causes
- Long load without recovery and recognition
- The role of “the one who holds everyone”
- Blurred boundaries of work and home, especially online
- Loss of meaning while duty remains
What can I do myself?
- Name the state accurately: “I am depleted,” not “I am lazy”
- Cut one duty this week that does not save a life
- Return sleep and food as a debt to the body, not a reward
- Tell one person the tank is empty, without a joke
When to seek professional help
If depletion lasts for weeks and already hits health, sleep, or the wish to live, it is time for outer support. Online therapy fits when there is no energy to travel “somewhere else to perform a role.”
Frequently asked questions
Is burnout a diagnosis?
In everyday speech it names a state of depletion. Medical conclusions are made by a doctor. A psychologist works with experience, boundaries, and meaning, not with a label in your place.
Will it pass if I take a holiday?
A holiday can give a pause. If two days later emptiness returns, the debt is larger than a week of sea. Boundaries and a change of cycle are needed, not only a view.
Is it only about paid work?
No. People burn out in caregiving, volunteering, parenting, study. The common thread is giving for a long time without recovery.
Does online work if I already want nothing?
Yes. A session can be quiet and short in content. You do not need to arrive “charged up.”
