Short answer
Burnout is more often tied to a role: work, care, volunteering — meaning fades there, sometimes leaving other zones (hobbies, friends) alive. A depressive state can flood everything: taste, sleep, the wish to live, even what is unrelated to the job. They overlap, and the mix-up harms: people either shame themselves for “just tiredness” or ignore a deep emptiness by calling it burnout because that sounds “more honourable.”

What is it?

The difference is a landmark for conversation, not a diagnosis from an article. Burnout: a give-without-take cycle. Low mood: a wider stop of contact with life. Sometimes both a psychologist and a doctor are needed.

Signs

  • Away from the role, something livens — more often burnout
  • Emptiness remains in the mountains and in bed — the state may be wider
  • Anger at the system and cynicism about the work — a typical burnout shield
  • Self-erasure “I am worthless in everything” is closer to a depressive verdict

Causes

  • A culture in which “depression” is scarier than “burnout”
  • A professional identity that forbids a wider pain
  • Similar bodily signs: sleep, appetite, pain
  • Fear of medication or a label makes people pick the “more convenient” word

What can I do myself?

  • Describe what livens away from the role and what is dead everywhere
  • Do not compete for the “right” name — describe facts of energy
  • If thoughts of death are present, this is already more than a deadline
  • Allow both words in a conversation with a professional

When to seek professional help

You do not need to win a naming argument to get help. Say how life is shrinking. A psychologist helps you neither devalue role-debt nor miss a state that asks for medicine.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there a comparison under depression and here too?

The angles differ: there, sadness and emptiness of life; here, role-debt and cynicism about the work. Both views help because the states often meet in one person.

Can burnout turn into a depressive state?

Long debt without recovery can widen. It is not inevitable. Early boundaries and support lower the risk.

Is medication needed for burnout?

A doctor decides. Psychotherapy works with boundaries and meaning. Medicine — if there is an indication, not from an article.

I feel well on holiday. So it is “just tiredness”?

Liveliness away from the role is a typical burnout hint. “Just” does not cancel the need to change the cycle, or the debts will return after the holiday.
