Short answer
Codependency signs hide as loyalty: you read a face, head off conflict, take the blame to keep peace, postpone your own doctor and friends. Sometimes the opposite appears — control, checks, sermons. This is not a disorder checklist. These are hints that your support has been placed in the other person.

What is it?

Signals are about attention, body, and choice. Gestalt is interested in where your contact with yourself breaks when the other appears.

Signs

  • The phone as a barometer: no reply, no ground
  • Fixing the other’s life as the day’s main task
  • Shame about resting while they are “not ok yet”
  • After a fight you apologise first without even knowing for what

Causes

  • The environment praises your self-sacrifice
  • Fear of emptiness if you stop rescuing
  • No practice of no in your biography
  • The body is used to anxiously scanning the other

What can I do myself?

  • Notice three moments of scanning a face/chat in a day
  • Delay a “rescue” action for 20 minutes and watch the body
  • Write one need of yours that you did not voice
  • Return one ritual of yours (shower, a book) without reporting to the partner

When to seek professional help

If the signs have already eaten health, friends, and work, do not wait until the other “gets better.” Your cycle can change even without their consent to therapy.

Frequently asked questions

Is this just being caring?

Care leaves you a place. The cycle takes the place. The question is not the number of gestures but whether you exist when there is no gesture.

I control tightly. Is that codependency too?

Control is often the other pole of the same fear of loss. Both poles can be met in therapy.

Do signs in friendship and at work count too?

Yes. The cycle is not only romantic. Rescuing colleagues and parents is the same logic of outer support.

Should I take codependency quizzes?

They can hint. Obsessing over scores again places support outside. A living conversation is more precise.
