Short answer
Codependency is when your “I” hangs on another’s state: a partner’s mood, sobriety, agreement, success. Care is alive when there is choice and a boundary. A codependent cycle often looks like love and feels like anxiety, control, and the disappearance of your own needs. This is not an article-label of a “sick bond”; it is a way of contact that can be learned differently.

What is it?

In Gestalt, codependency is confluence: the boundary between you dissolves so as not to meet loneliness or conflict. Online therapy helps you feel again where you end and the other begins.

Signs

  • The day’s mood depends on a partner’s message
  • Your plans cancel “automatically” if the other is having a hard time
  • Hard to say what you want apart from “we need”
  • Calm appears only when the other is “ok”

Causes

  • A childhood role of rescuer or invisible one
  • Fear of abandonment stronger than fear of vanishing yourself
  • Relationships in which love was proved by serving
  • Shame about having separate needs

What can I do myself?

  • Once a day ask: “what do I want — not we” — even about tea
  • Notice the body when the urge to “fix” the other appears
  • Leave one small task only for yourself
  • Do not diagnose yourself from a forum checklist — describe the cycle

When to seek professional help

If you no longer recognise your life apart from the other, it is time for a witness. A psychologist does not take love away; they return a place from which love can be a choice.

Frequently asked questions

Is this always about a partner’s alcohol?

No. The cycle can centre on mood, work, anxiety, parents. Alcohol is a common centre, not the only one.

Can I love and not be codependent?

Yes. Love with a boundary is not cold. Cold is often the result of confluence that has already exhausted you.

Does online suit this topic?

Yes. At home you can see how the body reacts to the other’s messages. The session can be a place where you exist without them in the frame.

Is this character or a learned role?

More often a learned survival strategy in closeness. Strategies change in new contact, not by a label.
