Short answer
Therapy for panic attacks does not work by the order “calm down,” but by changing the relationship to the body and to fear of repetition. When the experience appears — “I can be with the wave and not disappear” — episodes often become rarer and avoidance shrinks. Gestalt offers here-and-now contact, including online, in the same space where you live with that fear.

What is it?

Help looks like a safe exploration of symptoms without a fight. The therapist does not switch the heart off; they help you stop treating sensations as an enemy and take back the choice of steps in the city, in the body, in relationships.

Signs

  • In session you can stay with a bodily signal instead of fleeing into story
  • Language appears between “I am fine” and “I am dying”
  • Fear of an attack during the meeting becomes a topic, not a taboo
  • Between sessions you try small returns to avoided places

Causes

  • Alone, fear of symptoms grows in a loop
  • There is no pacing: either total avoidance or a heroic leap
  • Shame about the body blocks asking for support
  • An article cannot witness your particular peak

What can I do myself?

  • Bring to session not only the “attack story” but what you do in the minute before
  • Agree a pause signal if the online space becomes too tight
  • Between meetings, pick one avoidance you are willing to shrink by 10%
  • Do not grade the week by episode count — look at freedom of route

When to seek professional help

If you have already been examined and “nothing was found,” yet the fear remains, that is a classic moment for psychotherapy, not for new night searches for symptoms. Live contact changes what a lab verdict cannot.

Frequently asked questions

Will therapy deliberately trigger an attack?

Not as violence. Sometimes bodily sensations are explored at a safe pace. Any experiment is by consent and with the right to stop.

How does Gestalt help specifically with panic?

By attending to interrupted contact: how you flee the body, how shame blocks asking, how control replaces breath. A new experience of contact rewrites the emergency script.

What if I cry or go silent?

That is allowed. A pause, tears, silence are part of the process, not a failed session. Online you can turn the camera off for a minute if that helps, and say so.

Do we need a couples therapist if attacks affect the relationship?

Individual work with fear of the body is often useful first. A couples format can be discussed later if both want a shared meeting.
