Short answer
Myths say: “a psychologist will split you,” “strong couples cope alone,” “if you love, you need not talk,” “online is not for intimate topics,” “seeing a therapist shames the family.” They keep people in lonely wars at home. Therapy’s aim is not to destroy the couple; it is honesty. After honesty a couple sometimes grows stronger, sometimes separates with less wreckage.

What is it?

A myth about couple help often protects against the shame of “we could not cope.” Gestalt meets shame as part of contact, not as proof that help is forbidden.

Signs

  • You wait for a perfect moment when you will both be “ready”
  • You hide therapy as if it were an affair
  • You treat sex or money as “not for a psychologist”
  • You compare yourselves with couples on social media and feel shame for being alive

Causes

  • A cult of the couple’s self-sufficiency
  • Fear of judgment from parents and church / community
  • Stories that “a psychologist destroyed a family” with no context
  • Mixing therapy with friends’ advice and with coaching on “how to keep them”

What can I do myself?

  • Test the myth: have solo attempts this year changed the cycle?
  • Call therapy care, not surrender — at least to yourself
  • Separate secrecy (your right) from shame (the inner court)
  • Do not promise a partner that “the therapist will reconcile us” — that breeds disappointment

When to seek professional help

If a myth has already closed the door, bring the myth itself to session. Often it is what keeps the couple silent.

Frequently asked questions

Is the psychologist always on the side of whoever pays?

In individual work you are the client, and that is honest. It does not mean a campaign against the partner. Ethics is not recruitment into a war.

Is online unserious for affairs and sex?

Intimate topics need safety and boundaries, not necessarily an office. Many adults speak more easily from home. Quality sits in contact and ethics.

Do strong people not air dirty laundry?

Strength is the capacity to ask for a witness when the two of you are already blind. Silence dressed as strength often costs health and years of life beside each other.

If we see a psychologist, is the couple already dead?

No. Often it is the first shared (or personal) act of care. A couple is dead when there is neither contact nor a wish to look for it. Therapy tests what is still alive.
