Short answer
Chronic loneliness lasts weeks and months: the world as if behind glass, conversations shallow, the body heavy at night, shame about calling first. Introversion is beside the point — this is a lasting deficit of meeting, not a need for quiet. The signs help you not reduce the pain to “I am unsociable,” but see that contact has been missing for a long time.

What is it?

Signals are bodily, social, and about meaning. This is not a diagnosis. It is a map for talking with a psychologist.

Signs

  • Unplanned weekends frighten more than overload
  • Hours in the feed, after which you are lonelier
  • No one to whom you can tell the truth without a mask
  • Sleep or food have become substitutes for a hug

Causes

  • A move and loss of a circle without a new one
  • Shame about needing closeness
  • Repeating shallow ties
  • A critic that forbids the first step

What can I do myself?

  • One small living gesture a week: a call, a walk, a letter
  • Notice the aftertaste of the feed — if worse, cut it
  • Name the state to one person without a joke
  • Do not compare your circle with others’ party photos

When to seek professional help

If the glass between you and the world has been thick for months, do not wait until you become “more social.” Therapy can be the first regular meeting.

Frequently asked questions

Is this already depression?

Loneliness and low mood can travel together. If taste and sleep are gone, or thoughts of death appear, tell a professional. You need not label yourself.

Can an introvert be chronically lonely too?

Yes. A need for quiet does not cancel a need for a quality meeting. The difference is dose, not the right to contact.

Is it normal not to have a “best friend” as an adult?

Forms of closeness differ. What hurts is not the missing title but the missing person with whom you can be real. That can be built, not only remembered from school.

Is it bad if a pet / job replaces people?

They can be support. The risk is if there is no human witness left. Then the circle is worth widening, without devaluing what already warms you.
