What loneliness is: when people are nearby and contact is not
- Short answer
- Loneliness is not necessarily an empty flat. It is the feeling of not being met: in a marriage, in a chat, in a new country, among colleagues. You can be among people and invisible; you can be alone and full. Loneliness hurts because the psyche looks for a witness. It is not a verdict that “no one wants me”; it is a state of contact that can change — first with yourself, then with others.
What is it?
In Gestalt, loneliness is interrupted contact: a need for meeting does not complete. Online therapy is already a form of witnessing — not a replacement for a whole life, but a place where you are seen.
Signs
- After a day with people, emptier than in the morning
- Messages exist, the feeling of being known does not
- Shame about admitting loneliness because “I have family / work”
- The body is heavy in the evening, as if there is no one to lean on
Causes
- Moving, loss, breakup, war — a tear in familiar ties
- A habit of not showing the real so as not to push people away
- Digital noise instead of meeting
- A critic that says you are “not interesting”
What can I do myself?
- Name the state accurately: “I am lonely,” not “no one needs me”
- One living contact a week matters more than a hundred likes
- Notice where you yourself avoid depth in conversation
- Do not fill the evening only with a screen — even 15 minutes off the feed
When to seek professional help
If loneliness is already eating sleep and the wish to go out, it is time for a witness. A psychologist does not “introduce you to people”; they meet you so you can be in contact again.
Frequently asked questions
Are loneliness and being alone the same?
No. Being alone is a fact. Loneliness is the pain of not being met. You can choose solitude without suffering; you can not be alone and still suffer.
Am I “weird” if I am lonely in a marriage?
No. It is a common pain. It is about the quality of contact, not about you being defective.
Will online increase isolation?
A session is a meeting, not a replacement for the whole world. For many it is the first safe contact from which later in-person steps get easier.
Will it pass if I endure?
A short wave — yes. Chronic loneliness rarely “waits” until you become more interesting. Contact changes more than endurance.
