Why low mood appears: not a single “breakage”
- Short answer
- Low mood rarely has one cause. It can be stored fatigue, unwitnessed grief, biochemical change, isolation, war, loss of a role or of meaning. Blaming yourself is a familiar but harmful reflex. It is more useful to map the conditions in which the psyche reduced the “volume of life” in order to endure.
What is it?
Sources of a depressive state can be outer and inner: events, and ways of interrupting contact with anger, sadness, a need for support. Gestalt does not reduce a person to chemistry, and does not ignore the body. A doctor and a psychologist can walk in parallel.
Signs
- After a “heroic” period ends, energy suddenly runs out
- Outer success exists, and inside there is an empty victory
- Anger had no voice and turned against the self
- A relationship or a job demands a role that is no longer alive
Causes
- Chronic stress and lack of sleep
- Loss and instability (including war and relocation)
- Family rules: “do not be sad, be convenient”
- Medical and hormonal factors worth discussing with a doctor
What can I do myself?
- Write three conditions of recent months that drained energy — without a trial of the self
- Note which emotion you forbid yourself most often
- Restore one daily rhythm (food at a regular time) even if mood does not change at once
- Do not diagnose “it is my character” at three in the morning
When to seek professional help
When the map of causes is tangled, therapy is the place to lay it out in another person’s presence. You do not need to arrive with a finished theory. Honesty is enough: “I do not know why it is this heavy.”
Frequently asked questions
Is it always a “chemical imbalance”?
Brain chemistry takes part in the state, but it is not the only story. Stress, loss, relationships, and the body act together. Reducing it to one formula rarely helps you live.
Did I “drive myself” into this?
You may have strategies that once saved you and now exhaust you. That is not the same as guilt. Changing a strategy is work, not punishment.
Why did it worsen when the outside became calmer?
While there was threat, the system held. When it became possible to “fall,” stored grief and fatigue come through. That is not ingratitude — it is delayed living-through.
Do I have to find a childhood cause first?
You do not have to start there. Sometimes sleep, support, and contact are restored first, and a deeper layer opens later. The order is agreed in therapy.
