What to do when everything is grey and energy is gone

Short answer
When energy is gone, big plans to “take life in hand” often fail and add shame. Micro-steps help more: light, water, one message, ten minutes in the shower as care, not as a feat. The aim of the day is not to become happy, but not to break contact with the body and with at least one living person.

What is it?

Self-help in low mood is lowering the bar to surviving with dignity, not to productivity. Gestalt adds honesty about the impulse: what is wanted now — to lie down, cry, be angry — and how to give that a place without self-destruction.

Signs

  • A laptop open and a tab untouched for hours
  • Promises of “from Monday” that collapse on Sunday night
  • Isolation that then feels too shameful to break with a first message
  • Self-criticism after every undone item

Causes

  • The day’s bar is still set from a time when you had three times the energy
  • Fear that a small step “does not count”
  • Comparison with a past “efficient self”
  • No starting ritual: the body does not know how to get up

What can I do myself?

  • Two-minute rule: just stand up and open the curtains — the day has begun
  • Eat something simple on a timer, without waiting for appetite
  • Write a message template: “it is heavy right now, no advice, just be there”
  • Take out the trash or wash one cup — movement without the meaning “whole life”

When to seek professional help

If even micro-steps are impossible for several days, or a wish to disappear appears, that is a moment for outside help, not another attempt to “get it together.” Online therapy can begin with silence and short sentences.

Frequently asked questions

Will a “low bar” cement laziness?

In low mood a high bar punishes. A low bar returns the experience “I can.” When energy grows, the bar rises. Right now a cycle of completion matters more than heroism.

What about work if I cannot pull anything?

Speak in facts with the body: sick leave, reduced load, an honest talk with a manager if it is safe. Therapy helps you not make irreversible decisions from the bottom of the pit without support.

Does exercise help?

Short movement in daylight sometimes shifts the body. Forcing “train until it lifts” often breaks you. Stepping to the building entrance can be enough. Measure matters more than a programme.

Is evening alcohol rest?

It mutes in the short term and deepens the pit and sleep in the long term. If it has become a daily mute-button, tell the therapist and a doctor. Without moralising — as a fact.
