Short answer
Signs of a depressive state often hide behind “I am just tired”: heavy waking, putting off hygiene, snapping at people close to you, an empty stare at a screen. Sadness may be there or not — sometimes there is only grey. What matters is a shift from your own baseline, not a comparison with pictures on the internet.

What is it?

Signs are changes in energy, body, thinking, and contact. They are not a disorder checklist. If several last for weeks, talk with a professional rather than collecting points on a quiz.

Signs

  • Sleep is either too long or broken, and morning does not restore you
  • Appetite vanishes or food becomes the only mute-button
  • Hard to answer messages even though loneliness presses
  • Small tasks (shower, a bill, an email) look like a month-long project

Causes

  • Shame of “not coping” makes you perform around people
  • The body slows while the critic demands the old pace
  • There is no language for the state except “everything is bad”
  • Others praise your stamina and do not see what it costs

What can I do myself?

  • Notice one body change a day without grading it — heaviness, cold, emptiness
  • Treat hygiene as care, not as an exam in “being normal”
  • Set a ten-minute timer for one task and allow yourself to stop
  • Keep a list of “I still did this,” even if it is only a glass of water

When to seek professional help

If signs overlap with thoughts of not existing, or with a total loss of self-care, do not wait “one more week.” Reach a psychologist and, if needed, a doctor. Online lets you start with a minimum of energy.

Frequently asked questions

Why are there no tears, only emptiness?

Emptiness is also affect: a shield against pain that felt unbearable. In therapy tears sometimes come later, when safety appears. No tears does not prove that “nothing serious is going on.”

Can low mood look like anger?

Yes. Irritability, flares, coldness are common masks. Helplessness may sit underneath. It matters not to reduce it all to “a bad character.”

I work and smile. Does that rule out a depressive state?

No. Many people hold function at the cost of inner emptiness. Names differ; the point is the same: an assembled outside does not cancel the need for help.

Should I take online quizzes?

They can hint that the state deserves attention. They do not replace a conversation with a person. Obsessing over scores can deepen helplessness.
