Loneliness after relocation: when the new city is not yet home
- Short answer
- After a move (country, city, even a district) the psyche loses rituals, faces, the language of jokes, “our” routes. People are around; history with them is not. That does not prove you “did not fit.” It is an attachment lag: the brain looks for the old circle and there is no new glue yet. Emigration, war, work abroad make this pain especially loud. It needs time, rituals, and a witness — not only a list of “networkings.”
What is it?
Relocation loneliness is an unfinished Gestalt of home. Online therapy in a native language is often the only deep contact in the first months, while the new language is still for shops, not for truth.
Signs
- Weekends without a “like home” route
- Fatigue from a foreign language after which there is no energy for friendship
- Idealising the old city and anger at the new
- Shame about calling old friends “again about how hard it is”
Causes
- Torn attachment to place and people
- Loss of status and of humour in the language
- Instability of papers / war / work
- A cult of “you should be glad of the chance” that bans sadness
What can I do myself?
- One repeating route and one “mine” place (a café, a park)
- Contact in a native language is not a betrayal of integration; it is hygiene
- Allow yourself to miss home without guilt toward the new
- A small ritual with the new city: a market, a choir, volunteering — without demanding a best friend in a month
When to seek professional help
If after a year the glass is no thinner, only the shame of “I should already,” therapy in a native language can be a bridge, not a refusal of the new life.
Frequently asked questions
How long is it “normal” to adapt?
There is no single deadline. Language, papers, trauma, children, money all affect adaptation. Comparing with people who “already fit” rarely helps.
Is missing Ukraine a betrayal of the new country?
No. Missing home is part of attachment. It can live together with steps in the new. A ban on sadness only deepens loneliness.
The children adapted, I did not. What is wrong with me?
Children enter school and language differently. Your pace is not a failure. You need an adult circle and a witness, not a contest with the child.
Should I go back if I am lonely?
The decision is complex: safety, work, home. Loneliness is an important signal, not the only argument. The map of motives is not gathered alone at night.
