Short answer
Myths say: “pull yourself together,” “others have it worse,” “this is weakness,” “happy people do not see psychologists,” “online is not serious.” They sound like care and act like isolation. Low mood is not cured by shame. Psychoeducation returns the right to ask for help without waiting for an inner court’s permission.

What is it?

A depression myth is often a family or cultural rule about emotion. Gestalt meets it as part of contact: who inside says “do not dare be heavy,” and what that voice is afraid of.

Signs

  • You apologise for tears and joke at once
  • You delay help until you become “worthy” of it
  • You hide the state at work at the cost of more exhaustion
  • You treat medication or therapy as a “character defeat”

Causes

  • A cult of productivity and “positive thinking”
  • Fear of stigma in family or at work
  • Confusing sadness with “slack weakness”
  • Histories in which asking for help was punished or mocked

What can I do myself?

  • Test the myth against fact: has willpower returned sleep and taste in recent months?
  • Say the opposite out loud: “I am allowed to be heavy” — as an experiment
  • Limit content that shames emotion
  • Separate morals (“I am bad”) from state (“it is hard for me”)

When to seek professional help

If the myth is stronger than the fatigue, it can be the first therapy topic. You do not have to “unlove” shame first — you can arrive with it.

Frequently asked questions

Is depression really selfishness?

No. The state shrinks the world; that is not the same as indifference to others. Often the person is exhausted by care they can no longer carry.

Why does “smile and it will pass” hurt?

Because it ignores body and meaning. A commissioned smile adds a split from the self. Support is “I am with you in this,” not an order to change your face.

Do only weak people see a psychologist?

People who no longer want to carry everything in silence come to the room (and to Zoom). That is an action, not a surrender.

Will online fail because I need the “hug of an office”?

Physical presence matters for some. For many adults, quality contact through voice and gaze is enough. Format is chosen for energy and safety, not for a myth.
